KAIRLIN® – A NEW RECYCLABLE AND COMPOSTABLE MATERIAL

1 min

Winner of a 2022 JEC Innovation Award (Design, Furniture and Home category),

Kairlin is a low environmental impact biomaterial developed by Kairos and partners EcoTechnilin, University of South Brittany and University of Portsmouth, for
applications such as signage and point-of-sale displays.

Blending flax fibres grown locally in western Europe with a PLA matrix, the recyclable and compostable material is processed in a one-shot compression moulding process, creating
lightweight monolithic or sandwich panels with good mechanical properties and a high-quality surface finish suitable for printing. In a fully closed-loop process, both
end-of-life Kairlin parts and production waste can be collected, ground and reused in new Kairlin panels while preserving 98% of the mechanical and dimensional
properties of the original material.
