The R-IDS Induction Dynamic Saver by Roctool (Sanford, N.C., U.S.) offers users a high-performance heated platen solution specifically designed for thermocompression molding of composite materials.

These induction-heated, water-cooled platens deliver high temperatures, short processing cycles and optimized energy consumption. Positioned for thermocompression, thermoforming and vacuum molding processes, the technology is meant to enable mass production of composite materials, whether for thermosets or, increasingly, for thermoplastics.

R-IDS technology is available in two classifications: one for processing temperatures below 300°C and another for temperatures up to 450°C. The latter is particularly suited for high-performance thermoplastic composites like PEEK and PEAK, which are commonly used in the aerospace sector.

R-IDS platen dimensions are often tailored to fit compression presses. The design also incorporates standardized components related to electrical and hydraulic connections to optimize costs. There are no size limitations; the largest platens produced so far measure approximately 2,500 × 1,500 mm. Roctool contends that this system outperforms conventional heating such as oil or electric cartridges.

To develop this market, Roctool collaborates with several press manufacturers across Europe, Asia and the U.S. Since its live presentation during JEC World 2024, Roctool says it has delivered and installed several R-IDS platens for various applications.

Roctool aims to extend its product by offering a “turnkey” equipment and tooling solution. This package complements Roctool’s range of engineering, installation, and commissioning services for its technological solution worldwide.
